What is Pilates?
Pilates is an effective and fun approach to exercise which combines the mind and body. It is a gentle, non-aerobic method of exercise which lengthens and strengthens the muscles, improving your posture without stressing the joints or heart.
All classes are individually tailored to fit each client. Thus, the Pilates method is as beneficial to the dancer and elite athlete as to the injured or pregnant client. Past and present medical history, posture and personal goals are taken into consideration when designing specific individual Pilates programs. All Pilates exercises focus on precise, smooth movements performed on either a mat or with resistance machines, emphasising correct posture, breathing and core stability in order to achieve an even, balanced and strong body.
The Pilates Method is based on the philosophy of Joseph Pilates (1880–1967), a German nurse and sports movement enthusiast who immigrated to the U.S.A. The first Pilates studio opened in New York City in 1926. Well-known choreographers such as Martha Graham and George Balanchine sent their dancers to Joseph Pilates. Hereafter, the method has spread to the general population and is today one of the most effective and popular training methods worldwide.
